2007 Corvette Z06

The lyrics of Andrea True Connection’s 1976 disco hit, “More, more, more, how do you like it, how do you like it?” rang in my head as the speedometer of my 2007 Corvette Z06 inched up past 80, 90 and 100 on a deserted straightaway some miles north of Malibu. The car bombards you on all levels; the sight of the rushing road, the sound of the roaring engine and the smell of leather and burning rubber all added up to a roller-coaster experience I wanted again and again over the three days I had the test car. The more I leaned on the Vette, the more action it seemed to crave - and believe me, honey, I punished it.

The ‘07 Z06’s got more frills than it’s ever had in its 53-year history; a nav system, XM radio capability, keyless ignition and steering wheel sound system controls are just a few of the ways it acquiesces to modernity. But the featured attraction is, as always, absolute raw power and looks. It takes a lot of easy-does-it to drive; its furnace is so fierce and the front end so light that your first journey might be in a circle if you’re not careful. But once you get used to the 505 horses at your disposal, you’re free to dig on the power in your feet, hands, heart and soul.

Believe it or not, the Z06 is practical, too; it’s got an extremely userfriendly, easy-to-understand cockpit and controls, and acres of room in the trunk unlike some sport cars which do away with any real storage space. Of course, you’ll want to know you’re going to survive your journey, and GM addresses safety concerns by delivering standard four-wheel ventilated, antilock disc brakes and optional side-impact airbags. You’ve also got an outstanding standard stability and traction control system.
Trunk space is surprisingly generous; your cargo area reaches all the way up to the seats and I fit everything from a guitar to a suitcase to a rocking chair back there. Whether you’re headed for a club or IHOP, you’re always dressed in top style when you roll up in the Z06.
