Clive Christian: Soaring to No. 1

Clive Christian
Clive Christian describes his newest fragrance No. 1 with the same words that one could use to describe the creator of “The World’s Most Expensive Perfume.” Luxurious. Enchanting. Distinguished. Exquisite. Rare. His newest fragrance for men, No. 1—even though for men, he refers to it as perfume—was created for the man who has nothing to prove, a man who simply wants the very best in life, the ultimate in invisible luxury; yet Christian only makes 1,000 bottles each year for the entire world. The scent is understated, yet distinctive, with a base that includes cedarwood, ancient Indian sandalwood, vanilla, and ambery woods. No. 1 has top notes of lime, bergamot, pink grapefruit, cardamom, nutmeg, Sicilian mandarin, thyme, artemisia and pimento. The heart of the perfume contains lily of the valley, rose, jasmine, orris, ylang-ylang and heliotrope. No wonder that with these exotic ingredients one walks away smelling of money. Envy Man sat down with this master perfumer to not only talk about the obvious but to find out what intrigues him about flying helicopters.

Envy Man: Do you notice a difference in the Clive Christian perfume men buy here in America versus Europe?
Clive Christian: One of the things that I decided on right from the beginning was that if we are going to be a global company we need to create something of global appeal. I really don’t notice a difference.

EM: Why is it that on the red carpets of numerous awards shows celebrities mention the designer of their tuxedo, their gown, and their jewels, but we never hear anyone mention their fragrance?
CC: It is difficult because it is not visual; the essential difference is that you cannot see it. I think that when someone mentions a designer it is because of his or her relationship with the designer or they have been given the product. We do not give anything away. We just don’t do it. The only way we really know if a celebrity is wearing Clive Christian is if they come to the counter and buy it. And even then we just don’t talk about it.

EM: I heard that you have a fancy with aviation . . .
CC: Who told you that? You must have been speaking with my daughter. I like the whole idea of flying. It’s like a fairground with a fair distance to the ground. It is breathtaking up there.

EM: How often do you get to fly?
CC: Less and less, really. Although I don’t like to fly commercial except from London to New York and vice versa—it would take too long to get there. People think that flying a helicopter is quite easy, just sitting there doing nothing, but it is actually quite difficult. I enjoy it.

EM: You have three daughters. Are any of them involved with the company?
CC: Yes, I have three beautiful daughters. Victoria is the only one involved. I am really, truly grateful for her. I am so pleased with her passion for perfume and towards everyone involved. Envy Man may be interviewing her next.

EM: What next from Clive Christian?
CC: Furniture is the predecessor for the Home Collection. We will have a boutique opening in Harrods, probably one in New York and LA. We will be doing silk scarves, leather handbags, luxury home items, formal clothing, wedding attire. It is like when man landed on the moon. There was a plan—how they were going to do it, when they were going to do it and probably who was going to do it. We are the same. The perfume will be the heartbeat.

EM: What was the first fragrance you ever wore?
CC: Before Clive Christian Perfumes were created I never wore fragrance.

EM: What are your pet peeves?
CC: Oranges annoy me—they are difficult to peel and have such a distinctive aroma, which is so difficult to remove from your hands. I simply don’t like them.

EM: Do you have a motto or words to live by?
CC: I do, I have the same motto for life and work, “In honorable thoughts glory will be found.”
